Summer (December – February)
Mowing
Mow weekly or fortnightly. Raise mowing height to 40–50mm to protect roots from heat stress. Never remove more than one-third of leaf blade at once.
Watering
Water deeply 2–3 times per week early morning. Avoid evening watering to prevent fungal disease. Deep infrequent watering encourages deep root growth.
Fertilising
Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early December to support summer growth. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds during heat peaks — they push soft growth that burns easily.
Weed Control
Summer is peak season for weeds. Hand-pull or spot-treat with selective herbicide. Keep lawn dense through regular mowing to crowd out weeds naturally.
Watch for Pests
Monitor for army worm and lawn grub infestations — common in Sydney summers. Treat immediately at first sign of brown patches developing overnight.
Autumn (March – May)
Mowing
Gradually reduce mowing frequency to fortnightly as growth slows. Start lowering the mowing height back towards 30–35mm as temperatures cool.
Fertilising
Apply an autumn fertiliser in March–April with higher potassium content to harden the lawn before winter and improve cold tolerance.
Aeration
Autumn is an excellent time for lawn aeration in Sydney. Core aeration improves drainage, relieves compaction and allows nutrients to reach the root zone before winter.
Dethatching
If thatch has built up over summer, autumn is a good time to dethatch before the lawn slows down. Avoid dethatching too late — allow 6 weeks recovery before first frost risk.
Overseeding
For lawns with bare patches, autumn is the ideal time to overseed with a warm-season grass. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for germination.
Winter (June – August)
Mowing
Reduce to monthly mowing — or skip altogether during very slow growth periods. Keep the mower blade sharp. Never mow wet or frosted grass.
Watering
Reduce watering significantly. Sydney winters are relatively mild but lawns are largely dormant. Water only if there is an extended dry spell of more than 3 weeks.
Fertilising
Avoid fertilising dormant lawns in winter. Wait until growth resumes in spring. Fertilising a dormant lawn wastes product and can cause salt burn.
Weed Control
Winter is the right time to apply pre-emergent herbicide to prevent spring weed germination. Treat existing broadleaf weeds with selective herbicide on warmer winter days.
Planning & Maintenance
Service your mower, sharpen blades and check irrigation systems during the quiet winter period. Planning lawn improvements now means you can act fast when spring arrives.
Spring (September – November)
Mowing
Resume fortnightly mowing in September as growth picks up. Gradually lower cutting height back to your standard summer height over 3–4 mows.
Fertilising
Apply a spring fertiliser in September–October as the lawn wakes up. Use a balanced NPK fertiliser or a lawn starter with higher nitrogen to encourage green growth.
Aeration & Dethatching
Spring is ideal for aeration and dethatching in Sydney. The lawn is actively growing and recovers quickly from both treatments. Pair with top-dressing for best results.
Weed Control
Apply pre-emergent herbicide before soil temperatures reach 15°C to prevent summer weed germination. Target bindii, winter grass and broadleaf weeds in October.
Repairs & Bare Patches
Repair bare patches, level uneven areas and lay new turf in September–October. Warm soil temperatures and spring rain support fast establishment before summer heat.
